Install HTTPGlass on Android
Requirements
Section titled “Requirements”- A phone or tablet running Android 10 or later
- No root needed
- The emulator works too, but the certificate step in Install the root certificate is still done by hand in Settings, the same as on a physical device
Install
Section titled “Install”- Download HTTPGlass from Google Play.
- On first launch, HTTPGlass shows its own disclosure screen explaining what capture does. Tap Agree and continue.
- Android then shows its own system dialog asking you to allow a VPN connection. Allow it — this is what lets HTTPGlass see traffic from other apps.
- Android asks for permission to show notifications, so HTTPGlass can show you that capture is running, with Pause, Resume and Stop. Allow it.
- Pick which apps you want to capture. You can change this at any time.
- Certificate setup, covered in Install the root certificate, is optional for now. You can skip it and come back when you want to read HTTPS in a browser or your own debug build.
What the VPN permission actually does
Section titled “What the VPN permission actually does”VpnService is the only way an app distributed through Google Play can see traffic from other
apps without root. Allowing it does not send your traffic to a remote VPN server. The
tunnel’s target is HTTPGlass itself, running locally on your phone: there is no VPN server and
no account, and nothing captured ever leaves the device.
